One Three-Core Cable, Three Outdoor Termination Points

The cable entry position and the three outdoor connection points are often shown on different parts of an electrical installation drawing. Between them, a three-core power cable must change from one sheathed assembly into three individually insulated cable ends. The length and geometry of that transition are important when specifying a heat shrink termination.

RIKI’s 24kV three-core outdoor heat shrink termination range belongs to its 20kV (24kV) cable accessory series. The illustrated kit includes three long red insulation tubes, shorter tubing components, multiple rain sheds and a black three-finger breakout boot. Four conductor-size selections are offered, from 25โ€“50 mmยฒ to 300โ€“500 mmยฒ.

The Breakout Must Accommodate the Cable Construction

Three-core XLPE cables may use different metallic screen, filler, armour and sheath constructions. After the common outer sheath is prepared, the three insulated cores must be separated without compromising the intended cable preparation arrangement.

The breakout component is associated with the transition between the common sheath and the individual cores. Its dimensional fit must be checked against the cable’s actual construction. The conductor cross-section provides an initial size reference, but it does not describe the overall cable diameter or the dimensions of each prepared core.

Outdoor Insulation Is Required on Each Core

The three cable ends are exposed separately after the breakout. Each requires an appropriate termination arrangement, including the treatment of its insulation screen transition and external insulating surface.

The rain sheds shown in the kit are associated with outdoor insulation design. Their purpose is to extend the surface path along the termination and help accommodate environmental exposure. However, the photograph does not establish the completed creepage distance or qualification for a particular pollution level.

An outdoor project should therefore identify whether the termination will be exposed to ordinary rain, industrial deposits, coastal contamination or other demanding conditions. These requirements must be reviewed against the actual product documentation rather than inferred from the number of visible rain sheds.

Three Terminal Positions Affect Cable Preparation

A single-core termination ends at one conductor connection. A three-core termination must accommodate three separate connections originating from the same cable entry.

The distance between the cable entry and each terminal, together with the available bending space, affects the required core routing. The electrical clearance between the finished terminations and nearby conductive structures must also satisfy the equipment and installation requirements.

These dimensions should be established from the equipment drawing and the applicable installation instructions. They should not be estimated from the product photograph or from the nominal 24kV classification alone.

Metallic Screen and Armour Details Belong in the RFQ

The cable’s metallic screens and any armour need their specified earthing or bonding arrangements at the termination. These requirements depend on the cable construction and the electrical system design.

For a purchasing enquiry, provide the complete cable designation, conductor cross-section, individual insulation outside diameter, screen construction, armour type and equipment connection drawing. State the installation environment and any required acceptance standards or test documentation.

The available catalog sizes identify the product range, but final selection should be based on the actual cable and equipment interface. Connector and earthing accessory inclusion should be confirmed through the agreed bill of materials before the order is placed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why does a three-core outdoor termination need a breakout boot?

A three-core cable has three insulated conductors inside a common outer sheath. The breakout boot forms part of the insulation arrangement where these cores separate. Three individual single-core termination kits do not automatically provide the necessary treatment for this shared cable transition. The actual cable dimensions and required screen and armour arrangements must be checked before selecting the complete kit.

What dimensions are needed when the three outdoor terminals are at different heights?

Provide the cable entry position and the location of each terminal connection, including the relevant heights and spacing. These determine the required routing of the three cores after the breakout. The preparation must accommodate cable bending limits, termination dimensions and electrical clearances. Final cut lengths should follow the instructions for the selected kit and equipment arrangement.

Can this 24kV termination be used for a 25kV cable system?

Not without a separate technical confirmation. The RIKI catalog identifies this heat shrink accessory family as 20kV (24kV), with 12/20kV cables in its application range. A 25kV designation from another market does not automatically establish an equivalent rating. Verify the complete cable voltage marking, system requirements and applicable product qualification before specifying the termination.

Are armour earthing and screen bonding accessories included for every three-core cable?

The published size table does not confirm a universal earthing and bonding package. Three-core cables can use different metallic screen and armour constructions, which may require different accessories. Specify the screen material, armour type and project earthing arrangement, and request a confirmed bill of materials before ordering. Conductor cross-section alone is insufficient to establish the necessary accessory configuration.
