24kV Three-Core Cold Shrink Indoor Termination Kit
- Three-core indoor cold shrink termination kit for 12/20(24)kV XLPE-insulated power cables.
- Five conductor cross-section selections: 25–50, 70–120, 150–240, 300–400 and 500–630 mm².
- Designed for preparing three cable cores from a common sheath for individual connections to indoor medium-voltage equipment.
- Cold shrink components contract without applied heat; breakout dimensions, insulation diameter and conductor connection arrangements must be matched to the cable.
One Cable Sheath, Three Separate Terminations
Three-core medium-voltage cables arrive at the equipment as one cable, but their conductors must reach three separate connection points. The transition between these two arrangements is what makes a three-core termination different from terminating an individual single-core cable.
RIKI supplies this indoor cold shrink termination range for 12/20(24)kV XLPE-insulated three-core power cables. The available conductor sizes run from 25–50 mm² to 500–630 mm². The illustrated assembly uses a three-way breakout arrangement together with separate termination components for the individual cores, allowing the cable end to be prepared for its intended equipment connections.
Three Cores Must Be Routed, Not Simply Separated
After the outer sheath is removed to the specified preparation length, each core follows its own route toward the terminal connection. The available core length, bending radius and position of the three connection points therefore affect cable preparation. In a restricted cable compartment, sufficient space for the cable breakout matters as much as the conductor cross-section.
The breakout also has to fit the actual cable construction. Outer sheath dimensions, individual insulation diameters and screen arrangements can differ between cables that share the same nominal conductor size. A five-range catalog selection cannot replace these dimensional checks.
Separate Insulation Systems, One Cable Assembly
Each prepared medium-voltage core requires the appropriate termination treatment at its insulation screen transition. This is an electrical field-control issue, not merely a question of covering exposed cable insulation. The component positions and cable preparation dimensions must follow the instructions for the selected termination system.
Unlike a straight-through joint, this kit does not reconnect two lengths of cable. Its purpose is to prepare the end of a three-core cable for equipment connection. The indoor designation also matters: the cable end should not be specified for exposed outdoor service solely because the voltage and conductor sizes match.
What to Send with a Three-Core Termination RFQ
A useful technical enquiry includes the cable designation, conductor cross-section, insulation diameter, metallic screen arrangement and overall cable dimensions. If the connection points are widely separated or space is restricted, provide a drawing of the intended cable route and terminal positions as well. These details help establish whether the selected kit and cable preparation arrangement are suitable before the order is finalized.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can three individual single-core termination kits replace a three-core termination kit?
Not as a direct substitution. A three-core cable has a common outer sheath and a breakout area where the individual cores separate. Three standalone single-core termination kits may not address that shared cable transition or the required screen and earthing arrangements. The complete cable construction and installation method must be reviewed before considering an alternative assembly.
What does 12/20(24)kV mean in the product’s voltage designation?
The designation follows the U0/U(Um) convention: 12kV is the nominal voltage between conductor and earth, 20kV is the nominal voltage between conductors, and 24kV is the highest system voltage value in the designation. This does not automatically make the termination interchangeable with products specified for a regional 25kV cable class. Project voltage and qualification requirements must be checked separately.
Why should the three equipment terminal positions be known before preparing the cable?
The terminal positions determine how the three cable cores need to fan out after leaving their common sheath. Differences in terminal height, spacing or cable entry direction can affect the required core lengths and routing. The preparation dimensions must follow the kit instructions while respecting cable bending limits and equipment clearances. An equipment connection drawing helps identify these constraints before installation.
What additional information is needed for an armoured three-core XLPE cable?
Identify the armour construction, metallic screen type, earthing requirements and cable dimensions in addition to the conductor cross-section. The termination arrangement must account for how the armour and screens are handled at the cable end. The published conductor-size table does not confirm which earthing or bonding accessories are included, so the required configuration should be agreed before supply.
