10kV Single-Core Cold Shrink Straight-Through Joint

  • Cold shrink straight-through joint for 8.7/10kV single-core XLPE-insulated power cables.
  • Five conductor cross-section ranges: 25–50, 70–120, 150–240, 300–400 and 500–630 mm².
  • Intended for in-line connections on medium-voltage cable circuits, including feeder extensions and cable section replacement.
  • Cold shrink jointing components are installed without applied heat; cable insulation diameter, metallic screen construction and conductor connector dimensions must be checked for the selected kit.

Cable Insulation and Screen Restoration in an 8.7/10kV Straight Joint

The conductor connection is only one part of a medium-voltage cable joint. Once a single-core XLPE cable is prepared for splicing, the insulation, semiconductive screening and metallic screen also need to be addressed. The jointing arrangement must maintain the electrical and protective functions of the original cable system.

This RIKI cold shrink straight-through joint range is intended for 8.7/10kV single-core XLPE power cables. Five conductor-size selections are available, covering 25–50, 70–120, 150–240, 300–400 and 500–630 mm². Unlike a multi-core joint, the single-core configuration addresses one insulated cable core and its associated screening system at the connection.

Cold shrink technology uses elastomeric components held in an expanded condition before installation. Removing the temporary support allows the component to contract around the prepared cable without heating it. However, the absence of heat does not eliminate the need for accurate cable preparation, connector fitting and correct positioning of the joint components.

Insulation diameter is a critical selection dimension. Cables with the same conductor cross-section may differ in insulation thickness, screen construction and outer sheath dimensions. Those differences matter when determining whether a cold shrink joint can recover correctly over the cable and connector assembly.

For project orders, buyers should provide the cable voltage designation, conductor material, conductor cross-section, insulation outside diameter, metallic screen type and cable sheath dimensions. The connector arrangement and required screen restoration method should also be established before final kit selection. Outdoor, underground or other moisture-exposed installations require separate confirmation of the complete joint system’s suitability.

Conductor cross-section is the initial size-selection reference. Cable insulation diameter, screen construction, connector dimensions and installation conditions must also be matched to the supplied jointing kit. The rated voltage shown follows the confirmed product designation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why is the conductor cross-section alone insufficient for selecting a medium-voltage joint?

Conductor size is the starting point, not the complete selection criterion. Two XLPE cables with the same conductor area may have different insulation outside diameters, screen constructions and sheath dimensions. The cold shrink components must fit the prepared cable and connector assembly. Provide the cable datasheet alongside the conductor cross-section when selecting a jointing kit.

What if the cable has copper tape screening instead of copper wire screening?

The metallic screen restoration arrangement must match the cable construction. Copper tape and copper wire screens can require different connection methods and accessories. Identify the screen type and screen cross-section in the cable specification, then confirm the joint kit configuration before ordering. Do not assume that the same screening components are suitable for both designs.

Can this cold shrink joint connect copper and aluminium conductors?

A copper-to-aluminium connection requires a connector specifically suitable for the conductor materials and the electrical application. The published joint size range does not establish approval for mixed-metal connections. Specify the material of each conductor, the connector type and the required connection dimensions before requesting a joint kit for this type of transition.

Can the joint be installed directly underground?

Direct-burial suitability must be confirmed for the complete joint assembly rather than inferred from its 8.7/10kV rating or cold shrink construction. The project may require particular sealing, sheath restoration and mechanical protection arrangements. State whether the joint will be buried, installed in a duct or housed in an enclosure so the intended conditions can be reviewed.

Does an 8.7/10kV joint automatically qualify for a 15kV cable system?

No. This product is identified here by its confirmed 8.7/10kV designation. A different regional voltage class or a 15kV catalog description does not automatically establish equivalence. Check the project cable marking, required system voltage rating and applicable product test documentation before specifying the joint for a differently rated cable system.
