12kV 630A European Cable Branch Box

The RIKI 12kV European cable branch box is a 630A medium-voltage distribution enclosure available in two-way to eight-way circuit configurations. Its cable connection arrangement uses insulating bushings and screened separable connectors, with stainless-steel and painted iron enclosure options listed in the catalog. The published enclosure protection rating is IP33, so buyers should check the circuit layout, cable entry requirements and environmental exposure before approving an outdoor installation.

How Many Cable Connections Does the Branch Point Actually Need?

A cable branch box is often ordered after the number of distribution circuits has already been decided. Yet a request for a “four-way 12kV box” can still leave the manufacturer with an incomplete connection scheme. Which cable enters the cabinet, which connections continue the feeder, and which positions serve branches?

RIKI’s 12kV European cable branch box range provides seven configurations, from two-way through eight-way. The catalog identifies a 630A rated current and an enclosure containing insulating bushings and screened separable connectors for medium-voltage cable distribution.

Start with the Single-Line Diagram

The branch count is the main difference between the available cabinet models. A two-way arrangement and an eight-way arrangement do not require the same number of cable connection positions or the same enclosure space.

For a new distribution project, the electrical single-line diagram should identify each connection point and its intended purpose. The diagram also helps distinguish a cable branch assembly from equipment intended to perform switching or protection functions.

The RIKI catalog describes multi-loop connections through insulating bushings and separable connectors. It does not establish that this branch box includes a load-break switch, circuit breaker or protective relay as standard equipment.

A buyer specifying switching capability must identify that requirement separately rather than assuming it is included in the 630A enclosure.

Cabinet Size Changes with the Number of Ways

The published reference dimensions increase as the connection count rises. The catalog lists 550 × 700 × 950 for the three-way configuration, increasing to 550 × 1300 × 950 for the eight-way configuration.

These figures help during preliminary site planning, but the current detailed drawing should determine the actual installation envelope. Door opening space, foundation or support dimensions, cable entries and access for connector work all need to be accommodated.

The image shows a green enclosure with two upward-opening access covers supported by side arms. Sufficient space must be left for those covers to open and for authorized personnel to access the connection compartment.

For the two-way model, the catalog does not provide a reference size. Its dimensions should be requested rather than inferred from the three-way cabinet.

630A Does Not Describe Every Cable Connection Detail

The 630A rating is published for the cable branch box family. The actual equipment assembly uses bushings and separable connectors to establish the cable connections.

The selected connector must match its intended bushing interface, voltage requirements and cable dimensions. A nominal 630A designation alone does not confirm that a particular front connector, rear connector or cable termination from another manufacturer will fit.

RIKI lists a cable conductor cross-section range of 25–500 mm² for this product family. The actual connector kit, cable insulation diameter and cable screen construction still need to match the selected connection position.

The project bill of materials should distinguish the enclosure, installed bushings, separable connectors, insulating caps and any indication accessories. The general catalog description does not establish that every accessory is included in every box configuration.

Stainless Steel or Painted Iron?

RIKI offers stainless-steel and ordinary-iron enclosure versions. The ordering table distinguishes them through separate model codes, with the iron versions carrying a “-P” suffix.

Material selection matters for corrosion exposure and project maintenance requirements. A painted iron enclosure may be acceptable for one location, while another project may require stainless steel because of environmental conditions or an equipment specification.

The photograph shows a green painted surface, but exterior color does not identify the metal underneath. The casing material and any required coating specification should therefore appear on the purchase order.

IP33 Is the Environmental Limit to Verify

The RIKI catalog states IP33 as the enclosure protection class. This rating should be read carefully when selecting a box for an exposed outdoor location.

IP33 provides a defined level of protection against solid-object access and spraying water under specified test conditions. It is not a watertight enclosure classification and does not establish resistance to immersion, flooding or high-pressure washing.

The project team should evaluate the planned installation height, drainage, nearby water sources, expected rainfall exposure and access conditions. If a higher ingress-protection rating is required, a suitable enclosure configuration and supporting test documentation must be confirmed separately.

Before the Cabinet Is Released for Production

A useful approval package contains the single-line diagram, selected number of connection positions, cable schedule, case material and installation drawing.

The buyer should also request confirmation of the bushing and connector arrangement, cable entry positions, earthing provisions and any accessories supplied with the cabinet. Where electrical type-test evidence is required, the documents should identify the relevant assembly and test scope.

Those items are more valuable than simply ordering a green 12kV cabinet by the number of doors or relying on a product photograph to determine its electrical configuration.

For each model pair, the first code designates the stainless-steel case and the -P code designates the ordinary-iron case. Dimensions are catalog reference figures; confirm units, axis order and current drawings before foundation or cabinet-layout work. Published electrical data apply to the product family and should be checked against project-specific qualification documents. IP33 does not establish waterproof, flood-resistant or submersible performance.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does an eight-way cable branch box provide eight outgoing feeders?

Not necessarily. The eight-way designation identifies the published connection configuration, but the actual allocation of incoming, continuing and outgoing cable connections must follow the electrical scheme. Submit the single-line diagram before ordering so the correct branch arrangement and equipment configuration can be confirmed.

Is the IP33 branch box fully waterproof?

No. The RIKI catalog specifies an IP33 enclosure rating. That classification provides protection under defined solid-object and spraying-water test conditions, but does not establish watertightness, flood resistance or suitability for immersion. The site’s rainfall exposure, drainage and installation arrangement must be reviewed. A project requiring a higher enclosure rating should request a separately verified configuration.

Are the 630A separable cable connectors included with the enclosure?

The catalog identifies insulating bushings and screened separable connectors as parts of the cable connection arrangement, but it does not establish a complete standard packing list for every branch configuration. Confirm which bushings, connectors, caps and associated components are included in the quoted assembly. The cable dimensions and mating interfaces should also be checked before selecting the connector kits.

What is the difference between DF-12-4 and DF-12-4-P?

Both codes belong to the four-way 12kV cable branch box family. According to the RIKI catalog, DF-12-4 uses a stainless-steel case, while DF-12-4-P designates the ordinary-iron case. The required surface finish, corrosion protection and installation dimensions should be confirmed for the selected version before ordering.

Can this cable branch box be used as a load-break switching cabinet?

The catalog describes a cable branching and connection enclosure using bushings and separable connectors. It does not establish that a load-break switch or circuit breaker is supplied as part of the standard configuration. If the project requires switching, isolation or protective functions, those requirements must be specified and reviewed separately with the appropriate equipment documentation.
