10kV Single-Core Heat Shrink Outdoor Termination Kit
- 10kV single-core outdoor heat shrink termination kit for 6/10kV and 8.7/10kV XLPE-insulated power cables.
- Available for conductor cross-sections of 25–50, 70–120, 150–240 and 300–500 mm² (WSY-10/1.1 to WSY-10/1.4).
- Heat shrink stress control tube, insulation tube and rain sheds combine stress control, insulation and weather protection at the cable end.
- Designed for outdoor cable ends at transformers, substation equipment and outdoor distribution, with cable dimensions and terminal positions checked before selection.
The Exposed Cable End: Rain Sheds, Surface Insulation and Terminal Sealing
A medium-voltage cable can arrive at an outdoor connection with its insulation protected beneath an outer sheath and metallic screen. At the termination, that protective construction ends. The prepared insulation and equipment connection must then operate in an environment that may include rain, airborne contamination and changing surface moisture.
This is why selecting an outdoor termination involves more than finding a heat shrink tube of the correct diameter.
Why the Rain Sheds Matter
The product photograph shows two red rain sheds alongside the main termination sleeve. Rain sheds are used in outdoor insulation arrangements to extend the surface path between electrical potentials and help manage exposure along the termination surface.
However, the visible number of sheds does not establish the finished termination’s creepage distance or suitability for a particular pollution severity. Those characteristics depend on the complete design, installed dimensions and relevant qualification requirements. Buyers should specify whether the installation is exposed to industrial contamination, salt-laden air or other demanding site conditions.
Two Different Boundaries at the Cable End
The first boundary lies where the cable’s conductive insulation screen is removed. The electrical field distribution changes at this location, so the termination system must provide the appropriate stress-control arrangement according to its design and installation instructions.
The second boundary lies at the outer cable sheath and the equipment connection. The finished assembly must address the relevant sealing and insulation interfaces. Heat shrink materials can provide a close-fitting covering when correctly installed, but the photograph alone is insufficient to establish water-ingress protection or approval for every outdoor condition.
These functions are related, yet they should not be treated as interchangeable. A suitable seal does not compensate for an incorrectly prepared screen transition, and a correctly positioned insulating sleeve does not establish environmental qualification by itself.
Four Conductor Sizes, More Than Four Cable Dimensions
RIKI lists four selections for its 10kV single-core outdoor heat shrink termination range, covering conductor cross-sections from 25–50 mm² through 300–500 mm².
The conductor-size bracket establishes the initial product choice. XLPE insulation outside diameter, conductor material, metallic screen construction and outer sheath dimensions remain relevant when assessing actual cable compatibility. The final termination must also work with the connection geometry and spacing required by the outdoor equipment.
What the Outdoor Installation Specification Should State
For a project enquiry, provide the complete 6/10kV or 8.7/10kV cable designation, conductor section, insulation diameter, screen details and terminal connection drawing. State the installation environment, especially when the location is exposed to rain, coastal salt contamination or industrial deposits.
This product is a cable-end termination, not an in-line splice or a separable connector. The selected cable termination, connector and equipment interface must be reviewed together before the supply configuration is approved.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Are the two rain sheds shown sufficient for coastal or heavily polluted locations?
Not necessarily. Rain sheds help extend the insulation surface path, but their number alone cannot establish the required creepage distance or pollution performance. Coastal salt deposits, industrial contamination and other environmental conditions may affect termination selection. Request the applicable product dimensions and qualification documents before approving a kit for a demanding outdoor location.
Does a 10kV heat shrink termination also cover 15kV cable?
No automatic equivalence should be assumed. The published RIKI 10kV heat shrink accessory range identifies 6/10kV and 8.7/10kV XLPE cables. A cable with a different voltage designation requires a separate compatibility and qualification check. The full cable marking and required project voltage rating should be confirmed before selecting a termination.
What distinguishes an outdoor termination from an indoor heat shrink kit?
An outdoor termination must account for environmental exposure in addition to the cable’s electrical insulation requirements. Outdoor designs may use rain sheds and other features for surface insulation and sealing. An indoor kit should not be substituted based only on matching voltage and conductor size. The complete termination design and installation conditions determine suitability.
What should be checked before connecting the cable to outdoor transformer terminals?
Confirm the cable insulation dimensions, metallic screen arrangement, terminal lug interface and equipment connection geometry. The installation must also provide the electrical clearances and mechanical support required by the equipment design. Terminal compatibility cannot be determined from the heat shrink kit photograph. The termination instructions and equipment manufacturer’s connection requirements should be reviewed together.
